Jefferson University Hospitals

A thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid gland to treat thyroid disorders such as cancer or an overactive thyroid. Jefferson's Thyroid Treatment Program is the only one of its kind in the Philadelphia region, and our physicians offer a unique multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of thyroid disorders, including tumors.

What Does Thyroidectomy Involve?

During a thyroidectomy, our surgeon will make a small incision in the front of your neck, and all or part of your thyroid gland is removed. This procedure usually takes several hours.
