Single-Site Robotic Cholecystectomy

At Jefferson Hospitals in Philadelphia, our surgeons offer a minimally invasive robotic procedure for gallbladder removal called single-site robotic cholecystectomy.

What Does Single-Site Robotic Cholecystectomy Involve?

During this procedure a small incision at the belly button is used to insert the robotic instruments necessary to remove the gallbladder; the robotic technology provides your surgeon with 3-D vision and a magnified view.

The procedure can be performed in less than 1 hour with an average hospital stay of 2 hours. The primary potential benefits of single-site robotic cholecystectomy are minimal scarring and minimal pain with fast recovery and high patient satisfaction.

Gallbladder surgery is performed to treat gallstones, a gallbladder infection or inflammation (cholecystitis) or a biliary obstruction. The single-site robotic cholecystectomy may not be indicated in case of severe inflammation or extreme scarring.
