Maxillomandibular Fixation

The lower jaw (mandible) is a frequent site for fractures due to accidents, trauma or sometimes underlying disease, causing pain and swelling. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons at Jefferson can perform a maxillomandibular fixation.

What Does Maxillomandibular Fixation Involve?

This procedure temporarily connects your upper and lower jaw by wires, elastic bands or metal splints so that your lower jaw can heal. You may have heard this procedure described as "wiring the jaw shut."

Fixation may last for several weeks, and eating is restricted to liquids, pureed foods and supplements.

Our oral surgeons will work with you to ensure that you maintain proper care of your teeth while undergoing this type of treatment.
