Liver Surgery

Jefferson surgeons can provide a variety of options for conditions that affect the liver and biliary tract, including liver resection, removal of stones within the liver and liver biopsy.

We have a long tradition of outstanding success in the treatment of patients with all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. Initiated in 1984, Jefferson has been the longest continuously active liver transplant program in the Philadelphia area where our surgeons have performed more than 500 liver transplants.

Our multidisciplinary team will take a comprehensive approach to your liver or biliary disease. Hepatologists from our well-regarded Digestive Health Institute in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology work in close collaboration with our team.

Bloodless Liver Resection Technique

Always on the leading edge of surgical procedures, a Jefferson liver surgeon assisted in the development of a new "bloodless" method of liver resection to safely remove up to 75 percent of the organ. The "bloodless" liver resection technique is improving patients' odds of survival and cutting recovery time in half.
