In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Sometimes, despite several diagnostic tests and a thorough examination, a cause can't be found for a couple's infertility. In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is very helpful after other treatment methods have failed.

If you are concerned with achieving pregnancy, seek care from the fertility specialists at Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA) at Jefferson in Philadelphia.

IVF is a treatment in which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized in culture to generate embryos. IVF often offers the highest chance for live birth for couples with unexplained or age-related infertility. It is particularly effective for:

  • Women who have been unable to conceive because of absent or blocked fallopian tubes
  • Women experiencing endometriosis
  • Men with a low count of normal sperm

What Does IVF Involve?

IVF generally involves stimulating the ovaries with fertility medications in order to generate multiple follicles that each contains an egg. The eggs are then retrieved from the ovaries prior to ovulation, using an ultrasound machine and a needle while the woman is comfortably sedated.

Eggs are fertilized while in culture and grown for two to six days. Embryos are then transferred to the uterus to establish pregnancy or are frozen and stored for later use.

IVF offers enhanced methods for fertilizing eggs even using low sperm counts or immotile sperm (called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI) and can permit chromosome testing of the embryos prior to transfer into the uterus, known as comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS).
