Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

The Marcus Institute of Integrative Health is the Philadelphia region's leader in "bio-identical" hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for both women and men. Our physicians have a carefully designed protocol to assess symptoms and determine appropriate treatment goals, and we offer the most advanced treatment.

As you approach your 50s, there is a natural decline in sex hormone production. For women, as you enter menopause, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone can all be affected. For men, the primary issue is testosterone. As these hormone levels decrease, they produce a variety of symptoms.

Women can experience hot flashes, low libido or sex drive, insomnia, diminished bone density and mood swings. Men can experience a low sex drive, decreased muscle mass, poor stamina, mood difficulties and weight problems.

What Does Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Involve?

Our physicians only prescribe bio-identical (or "bio-equivalent") hormones – the exact chemical formula found in the human body. The formula is 100 percent human – they are NOT simulations or variations of those found in nature. We do not use any synthetic hormones which were the subject of a great deal of controversy and concern several years ago.

Further, our approach almost always uses smaller dosages than with the other alternatives. Your dosage is based on your blood work results, age, weight, risk factors and metabolic characteristics. It is tailored to you, your physiology and your specific needs.

The Philadelphia Region's Leading Center for Pellet Therapy

Effective, convenient, long lasting and safe. These are just a few reasons why our patients prefer this specialized method of hormone replacement. Pellets are about the size of a grain of rice and are easily placed under the skin in an unnoticeable area. The procedure is painless and is typically repeated every four to six months. There are two advantages to pellet therapy:

  • Fewer potential side affects than oral preparations
  • More convenient than topical preparations

We Measure Pellet Therapy Results

One month after insertion, you will have another blood test. We will discuss the results of that test with you and make any necessary modifications. Typically, you can expect to feel relief of symptoms by this time. As symptoms begin to recur, usually in about six months, a new blood test will be ordered for the next pellet insertion. We always monitor both your symptoms and your medical lab tests.

Patient Evaluation for Hormone Replacement Therapy

In order to determine if HRT is the correct treatment, you will go through a detailed assessment that includes:

  • An initial questionnaire to evaluate your personal needs and goals
  • Blood work to check hormonal levels
  • Other tests may be scheduled depending upon your specific situation
  • A follow-up appointment to discuss test results
