Egg Freezing, Sperm Freezing & Embryo Freezing

Egg freezing, sperm freezing and embryo freezing are important options for preserving fertility in patients postponing pregnancy for personal or medical reasons.

If you and your partner are considering one or more of these options, the fertility specialists at Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA) at Jefferson in Philadelphia can help.

What Does Egg Freezing Involve?

Fertility declines for all women over time, with a steep decline between the ages of 35 and 45. This fall in egg quality and quantity fluctuates, occurring earlier for some women and later for others. A decline in fertility potential with age is associated with increased risks of miscarriage or a chromosomally abnormal child with advancing age.

Because eggs can be frozen indefinitely and have the highest fertility potential in younger women, freezing eggs is an effective means of protecting future fertility. Egg freezing is an optional component of any in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

Women postponing reproduction for personal or medical reasons, or who are preparing for cancer therapies that might reduce future fertility, can now freeze eggs for future use prior to initiating their cancer chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

What Does Sperm Freezing Involve?

For men who are postponing reproduction for medical reasons and for whom cancer chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy may reduce future fertility potential, freezing sperm is an important way to protect future fertility potential.

The sperm are washed and counted and then can be frozen indefinitely.

What Does Embryo Freezing Involve?

Embryo freezing is similar to egg freezing but is currently a great option for women with a partner or for women who choose to use donor sperm to fertilize their eggs. Resulting embryos are then frozen and stored for future use.

Embryo freezing is an optional component of any IVF treatment. Because frozen embryos are generally associated with higher pregnancy rates than frozen eggs, embryo freezing is an important means of protecting fertility potential for women who are postponing reproduction for personal or medical reasons.
