If you have been diagnosed with bladder cancer, turn to the highly skilled urologic surgeons at Jefferson. You and your surgeon will discuss whether you require a radical cystectomy, which is the removal of your bladder and associated lymph nodes.
What Does Cystectomy Involve?
This procedure can be done robotically utilizing the da Vinci® surgical system, which allows the surgeon to view the surgical area in high definition, making the operation very precise. Once the bladder is removed, your surgeon will create a urinary diversion.
You and your surgeon will then discuss the type of diversion (ileal conduit, neobladder or Indiana pouch), and whether the procedure can be done robotically.
Possible advantages to having this procedure done robotically are numerous:
- Less pain
- Less blood loss
- Less risk of infection
- Less scarring
- Shorter hospital stay
- Shorter recovery time
