Strauss Donates to Creation of Stem Cell Center
PHILADELPHIA – The Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience at Jefferson has proudly accepted a $500,000 donation from Kimberly Strauss and the Strauss Foundation in honor of her late father, Robert Perry Strauss. The investment will support the creation of a new Stem Cell Center at Jefferson. In recognition of this gift, the lobby of the Health Professions Academic Building at 901 Walnut Street has been renamed in Mr. Strauss’ honor.
From his days as an All-Philadelphia, All-Southern Conference basketball player to his starring role in a production of Hamlet to his work as an executive for Pep Boys Auto Stores, which his father co-founded in 1921, Mr. Strauss led an exciting, successful and varied life.
His story began at Jefferson, the hospital where he was born. His daughter sees this donation as a way to celebrate her father’s life from beginning to end while making a difference in the lives of others.
In addition to her father’s ties to Jefferson, Ms. Strauss was moved to contribute to the institution because of groundbreaking clinical and research advancements underway in the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience. Lorraine Iacovitti, PhD, a professor of neuroscience whose research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, will lead the new Stem Cell Center. “These generous funds will enable us to advance our initiatives on personalized treatments for an array of conditions of the nervous system, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS, Huntington’s, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury,” said Dr. Iacovitti.
“On behalf of the Strauss Foundation, I am enormously proud to make this donation to Jefferson in honor of my late father whose enterprising and compassionate spirit are emblematic of this organization’s ambitious drive into neuroscientific research,” said Ms. Strauss.
Jefferson is proud to memorialize Mr. Strauss, and is eager to make advances in the field of neuroscience in his honor.
