Jefferson Names Endowed Professorship in Cardiology

Paul Mather, MD, director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center at the Jefferson Heart Institute was recently named the Lubert Family professor of Cardiology. This endowed professorship was made possible through a generous gift from Ira M. Lubert and the Lubert Family along with other donors.

Dr. Mather heads the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center, the team that cares for the sickest cardiac patients with the most serious kinds of cardiac disorders, often leading up to and following cardiac transplantation. He is currently leading Jefferson scientists in their efforts to develop new ways to detect, treat and prevent heart failure.

“This is a great honor and wonderful, welcome support for our program,” says Dr. Mather. “I am grateful to Mr. Lubert and the Lubert family and friends and Jefferson supporters for enabling us to continue to grow our research program and continue Jefferson’s legacy as innovators in cardiovascular medicine and surgery.”

Dr. Mather’s research interests are in ventricular remodeling and assist devices as well as right ventricular function related to other organ transplantation such as lung and liver. He has won awards for his teaching and humanism and is the co-author of many journal articles and book chapters on heart failure and heart transplantation.  He is a frequent presenter at local grand rounds as well as national meetings.

Ira Lubert is a driving force behind the growth of Jefferson's advanced heart failure research program and the division of Cardiology’s work to improve treatment for patients with congestive heart failure. A long-time Jefferson supporter, his family name is at the center of Jefferson’s campus. Through his support Sidney and Ethal Lubert Plaza (corner of 10th and Locust), the main campus green, was named in honor of his parents.  He was a University trustee from 2005 to 2011. He is co-founder of Independence Capital Partners, a family of eight private equity and real estate funds. Mr. Lubert also serves on the board of notable local organizations such as the Wistar Institute, the Franklin Institute, the Philadelphia Red Cross and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Constitution Center.

Dr. Mather is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is a member of the Heart Failure Society of America, the American Society of Transplantation and the Congestive Heart Failure Task Force of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. He is currently president of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Region of the American Heart Association. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University School of Medicine and has been a member of Jefferson’s faculty since 2004.
