Renal Vascular Disease
There are several different types of renal vascular disease, including renal artery stenosis, thrombosis, aneurysm and renal vein thrombosis. Each of these conditions represents a significant health condition and needs expert treatment. Vascular disease specialists at Jefferson are among the best in diagnosing and treating these critical conditions.
Any blockages of the arteries and veins that lead to the kidneys can cause damage to the tissues of the kidneys, kidney failure and/or high blood pressure. The multidisciplinary team of Jefferson's Department of Urology, Division of Nephrology and Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery will work together to provide a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan that will return you to better health.
Our physicians in the Department of Urology use minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopy. These are surgical procedures in which a fiber-optic instrument is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen and used to perform surgery in the kidney, ureters, bladder and prostate. Robotically assisted laparoscopy can also be performed.
Kidney specialists in the Nephrology Division offer comprehensive care for patients with chronic and acute renal disorders, nephrolithiasis, diabetic nephropathy, renal failure, secondary and essential hypertension and complications of pregnancy, as well as dialysis care and transplantation services.
Surgeons in our Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery treat patients with arterial and venous disorders through surgery and minimally invasive endovascular techniques. We also perform stenting procedures of renal and visceral vessels.
Advanced Technology at the Jefferson Vascular Center
At the Jefferson Vascular Center, our physicians use the latest ultrasound technology to perform noninvasive vascular studies to evaluate arteries and veins in the body and detect vascular disease such as atherosclerosis, aneurysms, blood clots and varicose veins. The Center brings together the combined expertise of Jefferson internists, cardiologists, interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons and neurosurgeons to provide care to patients with many different vascular conditions.
Our medical staff is able to accurately detect and diagnose renal vascular disease through computed tomography (CT) angiography using the advanced Philips Brilliance iCT 256-slice scanner. Jefferson is the only hospital in the Philadelphia region — and one of only a handful in the nation — to offer this technology, which allows us to image blood vessels with never-before-seen clarity and details in order to make accurate diagnoses of vascular disease.
Jefferson is also one of the few hospitals to have a dedicated endovascular operating room suite, which is equipped to perform a range of minimally invasive endovascular and open surgical procedures, such as bypass surgery and endarterectomy, a procedure to remove plaque from the renal arteries.
We also provide access to the most advanced technologies and techniques used in the treatment of vascular diseases, thanks in part to our participation and leading role in clinical studies.
