Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by recurrent painful boils that favor the underarms, groin, and buttocks. Hidradenitis suppurativa’s cause is unknown, but thought to stem from abnormal hair follicle blockage, rupture, and inflammation of the surrounding soft tissue. This leads to the formation of the abscesses in sinus tracts, and may even result in bacterial infection of the involved follicles.
Hidradenitis suppurativa typically begins in puberty, but can also occur later on in life. The condition is most common among females, smokers, and African Americans. Approximately one-third of patients report a family history of the condition. Diabetes, obesity, and hormonal disturbances are also contributing factors. It is not contagious and not caused by poor hygiene.
