Dr. Herrine discusses fatty liver disease

If you have been diagnosed with fatty liver disease, an accumulation of fat in the liver, it may cause inflammation and scarring. If left untreated, you can be at risk for more serious liver disease, including liver failure.

There is no one treatment for fatty liver disease. Rather, Jefferson Health hepatologists (physicians who specialize in liver disease) will help you treat the underlying causes, which can include diabetes, obesity or hypertension. If traditional treatments do not work, Jefferson Health may be able to offer you enrollment in clinical trials to treat this disease.

If damage to your liver cannot be controlled, a liver transplant may be necessary. The Jefferson Health Liver Transplant Program in Philadelphia has a long tradition of outstanding success. We have the longest-running program in the Delaware Valley as well as the fastest-growing liver transplantation program within the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN)'s Region 2, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
