An inflammation in the chest that causes pain is known as costochondritis, also referred to as chest wall pain. It can happen from an injury, physical strain, fibromyalgia, an infection or pain in other areas of your body. Other times, the cause of costochondritis is unknown.
If you are experiencing sudden chest pain, please go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. If your chest pain isn't causing immediate concern, schedule an appointment with a family medicine physician at Jefferson.
Your physician will evaluate your condition and ask you to describe your pain to see if a consultation with a specialist is needed. With treatment, costochondritis usually goes away in a few days.
