Message from our Chair

The Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience is at the forefront of neuroscience discovery and disease treatment. We have brought together our globally recognized researchers and physicians from neurosurgery, neurology, psychiatry and neuroscience. Our integration with Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health and our South Jersey Jefferson Health locations further enriches the research and services we offer as we work toward a shared goal of accelerating our translational research into new treatments and procedures. The team is currently working on advancements in treating brain and spine disorders like Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, ALS, stroke, MS and brain tumors.

Above all, we are deeply grateful to Vickie and Jack Farber and the Farber Family Foundation, who have been steadfast partners, engaged leaders and visionary investors. Not only do they share our commitment, but they generously support our efforts, to find effective treatments, preventive therapies — maybe even cures — for life-altering neurological diseases.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Rosenwasser, MD, MBA, FACS, FAHA
Jewell L. Osterholm, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery

History

The Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience at Jefferson was established with a generous gift from Vickie and Jack Farber of the Farber Family Foundation, Inc., and first opened its doors early in 2002.

Vickie and Jack Farber are longtime Jeffersonians who have supported the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience, the Frances and Joseph Weinberg Unit for ALS Research, endowed professorships, scholarships and signature events. Through their efforts, they have emboldened Jefferson to greater discovery, more excellent teaching and better care for those who need us most.

Jack’s stewardship on our Board of Trustees, Executive Advisory Board of the Farber Institute and numerous executive committees has helped make Jefferson a healthcare leader. Vickie’s dedication to the fight against debilitating neurological disorders has served as a powerful inspiration to our physicians, students, faculty and patients.

Since it was founded, the institute has supported the departments that were carrying out basic, translational and clinical research designed to understand fundamental mechanisms of the normal and diseased brain. Specialists translate that understanding into treatments for neurodegenerative and other devastating disorders.

The Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience’s mission is the discovery and translation of scientific advancements into innovative treatments for diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. We fulfill our mission through the delivery of excellent patient care and quality outcomes, development of high-impact and novel research, and superb training of the next generation of clinicians and scientists.

Research is still a core component of the institute, but in 2015 Jefferson expanded the vision by including clinical care for our neuroscience patients as part of the institute.
