A child may be born with a disorder affecting the kidney and urinary tract, or acquire one later in life through disease and infection. A pediatric nephrology specialist (kidney doctor) can evaluate and treat a wide range of kidney problems.

At Jefferson, you have access to board-certified/board-eligible pediatric nephrologists from Nemours Children’s Health. Nemours pediatric nephrologists work closely with pediatricians, urologists, surgeons, radiologists, nurses, dietitians and social workers, all dedicated to the compassionate care of children with all types of kidney diseases.

Evaluating Kidney Conditions in Children

Some of the kidney problems we evaluate include:

  • Abnormal development of the kidneys such as multicystic dysplastic kidney
  • Acute renal insufficiency
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Effects of structural birth defects on the formation of the urinary tract such as hydronephrosis (swollen kidney), obstruction (blockage), vesicoureteral reflux and renal agenesis (born with one kidney)
  • All forms of glomerulonephritis
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Inherited kidney diseases such as autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, nephronophthisis, medullary sponge kidney, Alport syndrome, Bartter syndrome and Dent's disease
  • Inherited metabolic diseases with kidney involvement such as Fabry disease, cystinosis, diabetes mellitus
  • Other inherited conditions with kidney involvement such as tuberous sclerosis and Lowe syndrome
  • Kidney stones
  • Lupus nephritis (autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus affecting the kidneys)
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Proteinuria (protein in the urine)
  • Urinary tract infections

Diagnosing & Treating Kidney Diseases in Children

The pediatric nephrologists at Jefferson offer consultation, evaluation and treatment of a wide range of kidney problems in children on an outpatient basis, along with providing in-hospital management of complications of kidney diseases.

During your child's clinic visit, our pediatric nephrologists will obtain a comprehensive medical history and perform a thorough physical exam. Depending on your child's condition, our pediatric nephrologists will perform the following services and procedures:

  • Urinalysis (analysis of urine to look for protein, blood or signs of urinary tract infection)
  • Blood tests to analyze electrolytes and kidney function
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring for evaluation of hypertension
  • Kidney ureter bladder X-ray to look for kidney stones
  • Kidney ultrasound, CT, MRI/MRA to delineate structure of the kidneys and their blood flow
  • Nuclear medicine studies to assess kidney function
  • 24-hour urine collection for stone risk analysis

Other services not performed at Jefferson but are available at Nemours Children’s Health in Wilmington, Delaware are:

  • Kidney biopsy
  • Dialysis
  • Kidney transplant
