Offering personalized, research-based treatment options for gynecologic cancer

Jefferson Health Gynecologic Oncology will partner with you and your family to develop a highly personalized treatment plan based on your unique medical and family history, genetic markers and cancer type and stage as well as your personal needs and preferences. While a cancer diagnosis is a life-changing event, we are continually improving cure rates using innovative, research-based treatment approaches, including the following:

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy involves the administration of medicines designed to prevent cancer from growing and dividing. At Jefferson Health, you gain a team of regionally and nationally recognized experts in chemotherapy and access to traditional chemotherapy regimens as well as clinical trials investigating new agents that target and fight cancer.

Fertility-Sparing Surgeries
With cancers of the reproductive tract, traditional surgeries for cure require removal of the reproductive organs, which would prevent future childbearing. We specialize in fertility-sparing operations that are designed to control the disease while preserving your ability to grow your family.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Also known as “Band-Aid” or “Keyhole” surgery, minimally invasive surgery utilizes small incisions rather than a large incision in the abdomen. Compared to traditional surgery, minimally invasive surgery results in less recovery time and scarring. During your initial surgical consultation, your gynecologic oncology surgery team will discuss if a minimally invasive approach is an option for your surgery.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment modality that uses beams of energy to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing. Our team of radiation oncologists partners closely with your gynecologic oncology surgeons to provide state-of-the-art radiation treatment of gynecologic malignancies.

Radical Surgery
An extended or more complex procedure, radical surgery removes all visible tumor with surrounding normal tissue. With specialized training and surgical techniques, our gynecologic oncology surgeons are able to obtain tissue margins around the tumor that are free of cancer.

Sentinel Lymph Node Mapping
Assessing spread of cancer to lymph nodes is important in the staging of most cancers. Through sentinel lymph node mapping, our gynecologic oncology surgeons inject dye into the tumor and only remove the specific nodes identified by the dye to assess if there is involvement of cancer. This technique decreases complications rates and leads to a quicker recovery.

Tumor Debulking
Tumor debulking is a surgical intervention with the goal of safely removing all visible tumor. Our gynecologic oncology surgeons perform tumor debulking either as a primary surgical intervention or after the administration of chemotherapy.
