Asthma Program

The Asthma Program within the Jane and Leonard Korman Respiratory Institute — Jefferson Health and National Jewish Health serves as a regional resource and referral center for the treatment of asthma and related respiratory and allergic conditions, including:

  • Asthma
  • Exercise-induced asthma
  • Severe persistent asthma
  • Asthma-related cough
  • Airways hyperactivity

We offer on-site pulmonary function testing, testing for airways hyperactivity, skin testing for aeroallergens, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and screenings for vocal cord dysfunction.

Multidisciplinary Care for Asthma

The Asthma Program provides patients with access to the latest diagnostic screenings and treatments available for asthma. We coordinate with Jefferson specialists in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley who are experts in speech pathology, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), thoracic surgery, radiology, gastroenterology and integrative medicine to provide multidisciplinary comprehensive care.

In addition, our specialists are actively involved in clinical and laboratory research related to asthma, and you may be eligible to participate.

Bronchial Thermoplasty for Treating Severe Persistent Asthma

For patients with severe persistent asthma despite taking daily controller medications and requiring frequent reliever medication use, bronchial thermoplasty may be an option.

Specially trained pulmonologists at Jefferson perform the FDA-approved procedure. Bronchial thermoplasty involves radiofrequency energy (or heat) that reduces excess smooth-muscle tissue build-up in the airway, making it easier to breathe.
