Center for Genetic & Metabolic Liver Disease
The Center for Genetic and Metabolic Liver Disease – the first in the Delaware Valley – offers a multispeciality approach to the diagnosis and management of a rare group of disorders that can cause skin or neurologic problems.
Some people with genetic and metabolic liver diseases can develop a serious form of liver injury from an increased amount of scar tissue (fibrosis), which can lead to cirrhosis. Jefferson's experienced hepatologists screen for these complications and help manage patients with advanced fibrosis and end-stage liver disease.
Genetic & Metabolic Liver Disease Types
Jefferson's Center for Genetic and Metabolic Liver Disease experts offer specialized assessments and evaluations to treat the following rare disorders:
- Hemochromatosis/Iron overload disorders, causing the body to absorb too much iron from the food you eat.
- Wilson's disease, which causes copper to accumulate in your liver, brain and other organs.
- Alpha-1 Antityrpsin Deficiency is a hereditary genetic disorder that can lead to lung and/or liver disease.
