Comprehensive Vein Care

Why Jefferson for your Vein Treatment?

As an academic practice of interventional radiologists, we specialize in the medical management and endovascular treatment of the following conditions:

  • Varicose Veins
  • Spider Veins
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (aka Pelvic Venous Disease)
  • Varicoceles
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS)
  • Vascular Malformations

What Are Varicose & Spider Veins?

Excess pressure and blood pooling can occur from poorly functioning one-way valves allowing blood to reverse towards the feet when standing. This causes veins to dilate and elongate giving the appearance of varicose veins. Spider veins appear as small or thin red, purple or blue web-like veins while deeper varicose veins are larger, protruding veins that have a rope-like appearance.

Who Can We Help?

  • Patients with acute and chronic lower or upper extremity swelling, pain, heaviness, varicose veins, spider veins, or venous ulcers
  • Patients with indwelling IVC filters who are interested in removal including those who are symptomatic from filter penetration or thrombosis
  • Patients who suffer from pelvic pain and fullness secondary to Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (aka Pelvic Venous Disease)
  • Men and adolescents with scrotal pain or heaviness from varicoceles
  • Patients with Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS) causing chronic lower extremity pain and/or swelling
  • Patients with painful or disfiguring vascular malformations

Diagnosis & Treatment

At Jefferson Health’s Comprehensive Vein Care Practice, we understand leg varicose veins can cause discomfort, heaviness, itching, throbbing and skin changes due to increased pressure from flow reversal commonly occurring after pregnancy or related to hereditary factors.

Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis) can lead to swelling and/or disability if left untreated. This is due to post-thrombotic syndrome which occurs when a clot does not disappear and scarring is left over within the vein.

At Jefferson Health’s Comprehensive Vein Care Practice, we provide complete evaluation and possible reconstruction of affected veins, when appropriate, to allow people to regain mobility.

We offer complete care for patients with venous and venous-related conditions. Our initial clinical evaluation assesses for venous and venous-related conditions and determines candidacy for treatment using minimally invasive procedures. Our Interventional Radiologists will describe the options to you in detail and will identify the optimal personalized treatment plan. For patients who are not candidates, we offer medical management, conservative therapy, and/or referral within our strong network of affiliated providers.

Procedures include, but are not limited to:

  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy
  • Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
  • Ovarian Vein Embolization
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Varicocele Embolization
  • Venaseal Non-Thermal Vein Closure
  • Venous Stenting
Treatments for all procedures are performed as outpatients with local anesthesia only. Patients are encouraged to resume walking and normal activities immediately while taking a break from strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 1-2 weeks.

Our physicians are leading the way in understanding the best future treatments for vein conditions.

Jefferson Health’s Comprehensive Vein Care Practice is one of the sites for the National Institute of Health (NIH) sponsored Chronic Venous Thrombosis: Relief With Adjunctive Catheter-Directed Therapy (The C-TRACT Trial) based out of Washington University in St. Louis. Only a select group of specialists participate in this innovative clinical trial which determines if the use of venous stenting and reconstruction can reduce Post Thrombotic Syndrome disease severity and improve quality of life.
