Blood & Marrow Transplant Program
An Aetna Institute of Excellence Transplant Facility
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is designated for adult bone marrow, liver and kidney transplants.
If you have been diagnosed with leukemia, aplastic anemia, lymphoma or another type of cancer, you may be a candidate for a bone marrow transplant, also known as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Years ago, such transplants were almost all performed using bone marrow. More recently, the field has largely shifted to a less invasive standard and obtain the cells needed for transplant from the blood.
The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is home to Jefferson's Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program. In addition to autologous transplantation, where patients receive their own cells, patients can be treated with HSCT using matched related donors, half-matched related donors or compatible unrelated donors.
There are eight research-driven transplant regimens, using both full intensity and reduced intensity chemoradiotherapy, designed to treat patients in varying stages of disease. This Program is accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation and Cellular Therapy (FACT), an international organization that sets quality standards for all aspects of transplant care.
Why Choose Jefferson for a Blood & Marrow Transplant?
The Blood and Marrow Transplant team at Jefferson delivers the skilled and comprehensive care you need. Jefferson is advancing the state of the art in this field and is capable of successfully performing transplants that are not undertaken by most transplant centers around the country.
According to the National Marrow Donor Program's outcomes data, despite treating a higher risk patient group, Jefferson has the best outcomes in the region for bone marrow/stem cell transplantation. That is why we have become the go-to program to which many physicians from other well-known institutions send their patients when they don't have another option to offer.

Our physicians and nurses are committed to providing you with thorough and compassionate care prior to, during and after your bone marrow transplant procedure. During your first visit, you'll meet with your care team for an initial assessment and to begin your pre-transplant assessment. The first steps are to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for transplant and what type of transplant is appropriate for you and your disease. This testing period will review your ability to tolerate transplant and will also serve as a 'baseline' for comparison post-transplant. If your treatment plan requires a donor, they will also be tested and assessed to ensure compatibility and the health of the donor.
Preparations for a bone marrow transplant vary depending on:
- The type of transplant
- The disease requiring transplant
- Your tolerance for certain medications
