tPA Treatments for Stroke

If you have experienced a stroke, immediate and appropriate care is essential in improving your chances of a full recovery. At the Jefferson Comprehensive Stroke Center, our specialists can offer you the most advanced treatments that are currently only available at tertiary medical centers with advanced stroke centers, like Jefferson.

Intra-arterial and IV tPA

Intravenous (IV) or intra-arterial (IA) tPA (tissue Plasminogen Activator) or clot busters offer a 30 to 50 percent better chance of cure from stroke disability.

  • Intra-arterial tPA may be administered within 6 hours of symptom onset and is administered by making an incision in the groin area and delivering the treatment directly to the clot via a catheter.
  • IV tPA can be administered up to 4.5 hours after the onset of symptoms.

As one of the few hospitals in the region to offer IA tPA, many patients are transferred to Jefferson to receive this lifesaving treatment.
