Sigmoidoscopy

Jefferson's expert team of digestive disease physicians may use sigmoidoscopy, a procedure that involves the insertion of a tube with a tiny camera on it, to obtain detailed images of the lower portion of your colon. The procedure helps us to identify the causes of diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, abnormal growths and bleeding. It may also be used for colorectal cancer screening and to identify polyps.

The information obtained through this procedure will aid our gastroenterologists in making an accurate diagnosis. If disease is detected, your Jefferson medical team may perform further testing or develop a personalized treatment plan based on the precise nature of your condition and your individual needs.
