Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections utilize a patient's blood to help heal natural tissues for ligaments, tendons, recovery after surgery and a host of musculoskeletal problems. Jefferson specialists use the concentrated platelets that were taken from a patient and inject them into parts of the body that have been injured or damaged.
After PRP injection therapy, a patient may experience an increase in pain for a week or two. This is usually managed successfully with acetaminophen and icing of the affected area. The healing process may take six to eight weeks. Stretching and/or physical therapy is encouraged during this time and will be determined by a physician.
Most insurance companies do not cover PRP injections. Patients are advised to contact their provider before making an appointment for this treatment.
