Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

If your gynecologist finds cervical or vaginal problems during a pelvic exam or your Pap test is abnormal, a loop electrosurgical excision procedure may be recommended.

What Does LEEP Involve?

This procedure uses a wire loop heated by electric current to remove cells and tissue as part of the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal or cancerous conditions.

Why Choose Jefferson for Gynecologic Care in Philadelphia?

Jefferson gynecologic oncologists are among the best in the nation in treating women with both premalignant and malignant conditions of the reproductive organs. Those most commonly encountered conditions include ovarian, uterine and cervical cancers as well as such precancerous changes as may be seen in women with abnormal Pap smears.

We also provide care for women at higher-than-usual risk for gynecologic cancer based upon a personal history. Our physicians often collaborate with other cancer specialists, especially radiotherapists.
