Biopsy

A biopsy is a procedure performed to remove tissue or cells from the body for examination under a microscope. Here is a list of biopsies we perform at Jefferson, with more details on a few:

  • Bone Biopsy — a procedure in which bone samples are removed to determine if cancer or other abnormal cells are present
  • Bone Marrow Biopsy — a procedure to diagnose disorders affecting the production of blood cells, such as anemia, hemophilia and leukemia or other blood cancers
  • Breast Biopsy — a procedure performed to remove tissue or cells from the breast for examination under a microscope
  • Cervical Biopsy — a procedure to remove tissue from the cervix in order to test for abnormal or precancerous conditions, or cervical cancer
  • Endometrial Biopsy — a procedure performed at Jefferson to obtain a small tissue sample from the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, to identify the presence of abnormal cells, or the effects of hormones on the endometrium
  • Kidney Biopsy — a procedure to analyze tissue samples from your kidney to reach an accurate diagnosis
  • Liver Biopsy — a procedure to analyze tissue samples from your liver to reach an accurate diagnosis
  • Lung Biopsy — a procedure to examine tissue in your lung to provide an accurate diagnosis
  • Minor Salivary Gland Biopsy — a procedure to reach a diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome or determine the cause of abnormal lumps or growths of the salivary glands
  • Mouth and Throat Biopsy — a procedure to diagnose oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Several types of biopsies may be used, depending on each case
  • Muscle Biopsy — a procedure used to diagnose muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular conditions
  • Pleural Biopsy — a procedure to examine tissue in the linings of your lungs or chest cavity to provide an accurate diagnosis
  • Prostate Biopsy — a procedure to examine tissue samples from your prostate gland to provide an accurate diagnosis
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy — injecting a radioactive isotope and/or blue dye into the breast before surgery
  • Skin Biopsy — a procedure to diagnose or rule out certain skin conditions and diseases.
