The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a clinical balance tool used at Jefferson to evaluate static postural stability. This method of assessment provides our expert physicians with information about changes in stability following a concussion.
In addition to BESS, our physicians utilize two objective computerized measures of balance: Sway Balance, an FDA-cleared mobile balance system and BioSway™, a portable test of sensory integration. These validated tools are modeled off of the Balance Error Scoring System and give our providers quantitative information about postural stability. Scores can be compared to either a personal baseline measure or age and gender-based normative data and will assist with return to play and/or rehabilitation following a concussion.
