David A. Sass, M.D., F.A.C.P., has been appointed Medical Director for the Liver Transplant Program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Anthony DiMarino, Jr., MD, Director of Jefferson's Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, said, "Dr. Sass's exceptional combination of clinical, educational and research expertise is impressive. His excellent training and prior experience as a Director of Liver Transplantation will be very valuable in sustaining our outstanding program."

Dr. Sass previously served as the Chief of Hepatology at Hahnemann University Hospital/Drexel University College of Medicine.  Prior to Hahnemann, Dr. Sass served as Hepatology fellowship director and Associate Director for the Gastroenterology fellowship program as well as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Sass was named a Philadelphia "Top Doctor" in Gastroenterology by U.S. News and World Report in 2012 and is President-Elect of the Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology. He was nominated for a Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Drexel College of Medicine in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Dr. Sass has published on a range of medical topics including biliary cirrhosis, inflammation and infection of the gallbladder, autoimmune hepatitis, and the psychosocial aspects of waiting for a liver transplant. His research has appeared in Gastroenterology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and Immunogenetics. He is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology, among many memberships in medical organizations.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in gastroenterology, transplant hepatology, and internal medicine. Dr. Sass is originally from South Africa, and graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School. He moved to the United States in 1994, when he began a research fellowship and internal medicine residency at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

He began his appointment at Jefferson on July 1, 2013.
