Carol Ann Gioia, RN, MSN, has been named Director of Nursing at Jefferson's Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia. The announcement was made by Mary Beth Edger RN, MSN, MHA, NEA-BC, vice president of Patient Services at Methodist. Gioia was previously Nurse Manager of Critical Care and has served Methodist and its community since beginning her career in 1987.

In her new role, Ms. Gioia will oversee the function, operations and staff of Methodist's Department of Nursing and its ancillary departments, which includes the Department of Respiratory Therapy and the Dialysis Unit. Approximately 500 employees serve these areas of the hospital and will report to Ms. Gioia.

“Carol has a wealth of knowledge and management experience and is a true leader at Methodist, Edger said. “She has worked in many areas of the hospital, which has led to strong relationships with our staff and a thorough understanding of the community we serve. I am delighted to have Carol onboard in her new role.”

“I am honored to have been selected as Methodist Hospital’s new Director of Nursing,” said Gioia. “I have had the privilege of serving Methodist and the South Philadelphia community for 24 years and look forward to continuing to strengthen the Hospital’s mission to provide exceptional, compassionate patient care.”

With plans to help advance Methodist’s ongoing quality initiatives and restructure the Shared Governance Councils, Gioia will also work to affect positive patient outcomes and support the Hospital in achieving Pathway to Excellence through her new position.

Gioia began her nursing career in 1987 as a staff nurse caring for medical and surgical patients at Methodist Hospital. In 1988, she served as a Critical Care staff nurse, later becoming an Emergency Department staff nurse in 1998 and then Nurse Manager of Critical Care in 2007. During this time, she also served the hospital as a nurse recruiter from 1993 to 1994, and as an Education Specialist from 2000 to 2007.

Gioia earned an Associates degree in Applied Science from Gloucester County College in 1987, at which time she became a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). In 2002, she earned a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Widener University, and went on to earn a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix in 2005 and a Nursing Management Certificate from Villanova University in 2009. She is currently working toward a Certificate in Healthcare Quality and Safety at the Jefferson School of Population Health.

An active member of the Methodist Hospital community, Gioia serves on numerous hospital and nursing committees and projects. She is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders and has served as an adjunct faculty member of the Nursing Department at Gloucester County College since 2006.
