Substance Abuse

Since 1972, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals have been committed to helping people find the courage to heal from alcoholism, drug addiction, heroin dependency, cocaine addiction and prescription medication abuse, and move toward recovery. We approach addiction as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual disease, which means we realize that this condition affects each person and their families on a number of levels: physical health, mental health, emotional well-being, social relationships and spiritual connectedness.

Jefferson's Substance Abuse Programs are housed within the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and are comprised of three separate outpatient substance abuse programs that each provides a different focus of care, depending on individual treatment needs:

Outreach Program

An outpatient treatment program that offers therapeutic and psychiatric services for individuals with alcohol abuse, nonopiate drug abuse and combined substance abuse and mental health problems (co-occurring disorders). Specific services include:

  • Assessments for appropriate level of care
  • Individual counseling
  • Group, family and couples therapy
  • Psychiatric and medical evaluations
  • Medication management
  • Referrals for additional services
  • HIV test referrals
  • General public information and education programs

Intensive Program

This is a 12-to-16-week intensive outpatient treatment program serving people who abuse cocaine, alcohol and other substances (e.g., amphetamines, marijuana, benzodiazepines) as well as those with co-occurring disorders.

The 9-hour-per-week program is designed for persons not requiring hospitalization or residential services but who need more than once-weekly outpatient psychotherapy as well as people moving out of detoxification, inpatient care or rehabilitation facilities.

Specific services include:

  • Assessment for appropriate level of care
  • Intensive outpatient group therapy three times a week
  • Psychiatric and medical assessment
  • Individual therapy
  • On-site 12-step meetings
  • HIV/AIDS prevention workshops, HIV/AIDS testing and pre- and post-test counseling
  • Structured relapse prevention-oriented activity groups
  • Referral services
  • After-care groups

Narcotic Addiction Rehabilitation Program (NARP)

NARP is an outpatient methadone treatment program for opiate-dependent individuals. Specific services include:

  • Medical and psychiatric evaluations
  • Methadone monitoring, maintenance and ambulatory detoxification
  • Psychotropic medication management as needed
  • Referrals for medical care
  • Individual and group psychotherapies
  • Family and couples therapy
  • Narcotics and methadone anonymous 12-step meetings on-site
  • HIV/AIDS testing and pre- and post-test counseling
  • Community education/information
