Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is often thought to be a "women's" disease, but it is also a common problem for men. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, Jefferson's Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Program offers prevention, diagnosis and treatment for osteoporosis and related conditions and provides multidisciplinary care coordinated with your referring physician.

Established in 1992, the Program was the first in the Philadelphia region, and Jefferson is recognized as a Top Hospital for Osteoporosis by Philadelphia magazine. With our state-of-the-art DEXA technology and vertebral fracture assessment, a key tool in the assessment of osteoporosis severity, our Program is nationally renowned and has contributed to the development of many recent FDA-approved osteoporosis treatments.

Our Program also has a state-of-the-art Infusion Room for the administration of intravenous osteoporosis medications. Consultation services on osteoporosis and medication infusions are provided at our Center City Philadelphia offices.

For spinal issues related to osteoporosis, our orthopedic surgeons are considered pioneers in the development of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS), which helps to reduce the risk of infection, decrease pain, reduce blood loss and facilitate faster recovery in patients.

Outpatient consultation and rehabilitation therapy services are available from our nationally recognized physiatrists and rehabilitation therapists. Our therapists practice an interdisciplinary team approach, working with referring physicians, physiatrists (rehabilitation physicians), nurse practitioners and case managers to ensure comprehensive quality services are delivered.

For chronic pain management and counseling, our pain management-trained anesthesiologists, psychologists and nurses offer the latest advances in both technological and psychological treatments.

Complementary therapies can be a welcome addition to high-quality health care. Ranked a Top Hospital for Alternative Medicine by Philadelphia magazine, the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine is a place where you can receive guidance and information on alternative therapies.
