If you are experiencing symptoms such as pain or tenderness of the gums, jaw ache, a visible gap where a tooth did not emerge or an unpleasant taste when biting down on or near the area, come to Jefferson. We will examine the tissue over the area where a tooth has not emerged or only partially, and order a dental X-ray to reach an accurate diagnosis of your pain.
Impacted teeth occur when an unerupted tooth is wedged against another tooth or teeth so that it cannot come in normally. The impacted tooth can remain stuck in your gum tissue because that area is overcrowded or there's very little room for the tooth to emerge. The most common teeth to become impacted are the wisdom teeth – for many reasons. For example, your jaw may be too small to accommodate them.
If the impacted tooth or teeth are causing problems with your jaw, we may recommend you see one of our oral surgeons. Jefferson's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery gives you access to some of the premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the Delaware Valley.
