Hematologic cancers affect the blood cells and are more commonly known as leukemias and Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Treatment for these diseases usually involves a combination of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation or a combination of the three.

Therapies and Transplants for Hematologic Cancers
Jefferson offers one of the largest radiation programs for cancer treatment in the Delaware Valley. Medical oncologists at Jefferson often utilize chemotherapy, which uses systemic treatment in the form of intravenous injections of anticancer drugs or, less commonly, oral medications to kill cancer cells.
Most patients receive therapy in an outpatient setting. Patients sit in a comfortable chair in pleasant surroundings and are able to read, sleep, watch TV or talk with friends and family during treatment. Chemotherapy infusion can be administered at the Jefferson Infusion Center.
Radiation oncologists at the Jefferson Bodine Center for Radiation Therapy/Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson have developed several new cancer treatments and have helped pioneer the use of advanced radiation therapies that precisely target cancerous tumors. Radiation therapies help a significant number of our patients realize cures, while it successfully slows the progress of cancers for many others. Our state-of-the-art image-based planning and treatment systems offer a more targeted delivery of therapies.

Our researchers have also discovered the potential gene responsible for certain types of leukemia, paving the way for new genetic treatment options. We also have found the cause of several blood malignancies, opening the door for effective ways to combat them.
