Hashimoto's thyroiditis attacks the immune system and destroys the thyroid gland. The thyroid helps set the rate of metabolism – the rate at which the body uses energy. Hashimoto's thyroiditis prevents the gland from producing enough thyroid hormones for the body to work correctly.

Jefferson specialists in endocrinology and metabolic diseases can give you expert evaluation and management of hormonal and glandular disorders involving the thyroid, pituitary, parathyroid and adrenal glands, as well as osteoporosis, other bone disorders, calcium metabolism and disorders of cholesterol and triglyceride metabolism.

Housed within our Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Jefferson's Thyroid Treatment Program is the only one of its kind in the Philadelphia region and offers a unique multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of certain thyroid disorders, including tumors. Treatment of suspicious thyroid growths usually requires you to see several different physicians individually and wait days or weeks before you have all the information you need. Our Program team consists of thyroid surgeons, nuclear medicine specialists, cytologists and researchers who can often streamline this process to just one office visit.
