A rare benign tumor of the balance or hearing nerves is known as an acoustic neuroma. The condition can cause hearing loss, ringing in your ear and unsteadiness.
At Jefferson, acoustic neuromas are treated by a multidisciplinary team that includes neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and otolaryngologists.
The Medical Advisory Board of the Acoustic Neuroma Association (ANA) recognizes that Jefferson has met the specific criteria needed to be recommended as a medical team with substantial acoustic neuroma experience.
Acoustic Neuroma Treatment Options
If surgery is required, our surgeons are experts at all microsurgical approaches to acoustic neuromas.
A nonsurgical treatment option is radiosurgery, often called Gamma Knife™, using carefully focused radiation to reduce the size or limit the growth of the tumor. Our team has been providing radiosurgery treatments for 15 years and delivered the first radiosurgery treatments in the Delaware Valley in 1991.
We have pioneered a technique called fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSR), which has shown great promise for hearing preservation in patients with acoustic neuromas.
