Having a baby is an exciting and special time at Jefferson. Our obstetricians and nurses provide routine obstetrical and maternity care for thousands of expectant women in the area each year. We help to educate expectant parents and ensure that you deliver your children in the manner you wish through our Parent/Family Education classes held throughout the year.

Caring for Moms & Babies

We have an entire suite of services available to you from the time you start planning your pregnancy through delivery and beyond. You will have access to:

  • Highly experienced and compassionate obstetricians
  • Extraordinary nursing care
  • Perinatologists (doctors who specialize in high-risk pregnancy)
  • Anesthesiologists who have been specially trained for pregnant women
  • Intensive care for newborns through our collaboration with Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
  • Maternity facilities including a well-equipped nursery and a 40-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staffed by Nemours neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners

You and your baby will be protected in our highly secured areas, from our labor and delivery unit to our mother-baby unit. We care for you and your infant in a family-centered approach and include the father or significant other in our care. We encourage rooming-in to enhance bonding and breastfeeding. Together with our dedicated case manager, social worker and home care coordinator, you will receive excellent care from admission to discharge.

Because we recognize that everyone learns differently, in addition to reading materials and instructions from your caregivers, you will have access to the GetWellNetwork, which is only offered in hospitals. This network provides information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can watch programs covering critical parenting topics, including Infant Care, New Mom Care, Breastfeeding, Car Seat Safety, Baby-Friendly Pathway, Development Family Life and Immunizations.

Breastfeeding Resources

Breastfeeding gives babies the most nutritional start in life, but it's a skill that doesn't always come naturally. Our Maternal/Infant nurses are here to support you and educate you about breastfeeding. Learn more about breastfeeding by taking onf of our Prenatal Breastfeeding classes.

If you are pregnant, or a new mother and have a question about breastfeeding, you can call the Breastfeeding Warm Line at 215-955-6665 to reach a lactation consultant. This handy guide from The Joint Commission advises you of the many benefits of breastfeeding and what you need to know before you're in the hospital, while you're in the hospital and after you leave the hospital.

Critical Care Newborns

If, during the course of your pregnancy, it is determined that your baby may require special care upon delivery, Jefferson is among the best in the region in providing critical care for newborns. Our Level III Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) is a 40-bed combined intensive care and transitional nursery that provides specialized care required for critically ill neonates and infants, including laser eye surgeries and head cooling. Level III status is the most sophisticated type of nursery available for infants who require surgery and other high-tech care.

Newborn Screening

Before leaving the Hospital, Pennsylvania law requires that your baby be screened for four health problems: PKU (phenylketonuria), hypthyroidism, sickle cell disease and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Screening is performed by taking a few drops of blood from your baby's heel and sent to a state-approved lab for screening. The state also mandates universal hearing screening for potential hearing impairment, so that treatment can begin as early as possible if there is a problem.

Our High-Risk Obstetrical Unit

You are considered a high-risk pregnancy if you have conditions such as:
  • Being over 35 years old
  • Having a disease such as cancer, lupus, diabetes, hypertension or asthma
  • Carrying a baby with abnormalities
  • Having a multiple pregnancy

Jefferson offers a high-risk obstetrical unit for mothers that require a hospital stay during their pregnancy due to complications including pre-term labor, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and poly-substance abuse. We also care for women with fetal concerns. On this Unit, you will have access to physicians and nurses who will provide education for you and your baby related to your specific health needs.
