Fatty Liver Center
Among the Nation's Best for Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
U.S.News & World Report rated us among the nation's best for Gastroenterology & GI Surgery.
The Jefferson Fatty Liver Center is Philadelphia's first adult center with a multidisciplinary approach to the buildup of extra fat in the liver not due to excessive alcohol use, also known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
We improve the diagnosis and management of your condition by centering your care amongst a core network of specialists. In addition, through research and clinical trials, we will advance our scientific knowledge of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to provide better treatments and enhance outcomes.
In some cases, people with fatty liver can develop a more serious form of the disease where fat causes inflammation and fibrosis in the liver (known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH). Our experts at the Center work to prevent complications of advanced fibrosis and end-stage liver disease which can be a result of NASH.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects up to 30 percent of adults and is the most common liver disease in western nations. It is estimated that by the year 2020, this form of liver disease will be the leading cause for liver transplant in the United States.
What to Expect During Your Visit
When you first visit our center, you will meet with a physician who will provide a physical examination, evaluate your medical history and lifestyle, and assess your risk factors for fatty liver disease. After this evaluation, you will work with your physician to determine if further tests are needed.
Once testing is complete, you will return to the Fatty Liver Center to review the tests results and work with your doctor to determine a treatment plan, which can include lifestyle changes, weight loss and nutrition counseling and medications.
