Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
If you or a loved one has been affected by epilepsy, you want the best physicians at your side. The Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in Philadelphia is among the nation's most respected, focusing on research, diagnosis and treatment for persons with seizures, performing the most surgical operations and participating in the most investigational drug trials of any epilepsy center in the Delaware Valley.
The Center staff strives to help patients of all ages achieve freedom from seizures and offers medical treatment, care and counseling for pregnant women with epilepsy, including genetic and psychological counseling and, when required, surgery.
Expert Consultations and the Latest Treatments for Epilepsy
If you are experiencing uncontrolled seizures and considering surgery, the staff of the Center will offer you expert consultations and the latest surgical treatments for epilepsy, from anterior temporal lobectomy to complicated removal or disconnection of brain tissue from sensitive areas. The Center's surgical team is the most experienced in the Greater Philadelphia region, performing 50 to 70 operations per year (more than all other area medical centers combined).
In addition, our team will provide you and your family with diagnostic services to assess how epilepsy affects quality of life and to identify and treat cognitive or emotional difficulties. With appropriate treatment, about two-thirds of our patients are able to lead normal lives, including going to work or school and driving a car.
If you are being considered for surgery, monitoring is necessary to locate the area where your seizures begin, among other tests.
Caring for Women with Epilepsy
Our physicians offer expertise in areas of special concern to women. We focus on the association of seizures and menses, sexual function and fertility in epilepsy, and care to promote the health and well-being of both mother and baby during pregnancy.
