Preparing for Your Visit

Prior to Your Exam

  • Please do not take blood thinning medication five days prior to your procedure. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, etc. Tylenol is the only over-the-counter medication you can take. If you take a prescribed blood thinning medication, please check with your doctor prior to stopping use; this includes aspirin.
  • Drop off outside films at least five days prior to your scheduled procedure. (Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
  • All female patients coming in for this exam should wear a tight bra.

On the day of your mammogram

  • Bring all previous mammogram/ultrasound films if NOT done at Jefferson-Honickman Breast Imaging
  • Bring your prescription for your mammogram (from your MD or NP)
  • Bring your insurance cards
  • Bring a photo ID
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any needed paperwork
  • Do not wear deodorant, powder, cream or talc on your breast or underarms
  • Inform the scheduler if you have implants or if you are breastfeeding

Your First Visit with a Breast Medical Oncologist

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • You will start with Registration - Plan to arrive 20 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to complete this process
  • Our medical oncologists will review all your health information and perform a physical exam
  • Treatment recommendations will be discussed
  • Additional testing and/or surgery will be arranged if decided on
  • Expect to be with us for 2 hours

Gather Your Information

We will request specific information from you based on your symptoms, diagnosis and any prior treatments. If you have not submitted this information electronically or faxed, please bring it with you to your appointment.

  • New Patient Packet - Complete this form prior to seeing your physician
  • Bring all breast imaging studies, both films and reports including:
    • Mammograms
    • Breast ultrasound
    • Breast MRIs
    • Breast biopsies
  • Bring all pathology reports and slides
  • Bring all diagnostic imaging studies, both films and reports including:
    • Bone scans
    • CT scans
    • MRIs
    • PET scans

Breast imaging studies and pathology slides and reports only needed if NOT done at Jefferson University Hospital or Methodist Hospital.

What to Bring With You

  • Valid photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport. We cannot register you without a valid photo ID.
  • All health insurance and prescription insurance cards
  • Co-pays
  • Referrals (if your insurance plan requires)

Other Items to Consider Bringing

  • Your appointment schedule and other materials we have sent you
  • The enclosed driving and parking directions from your new patient packet
  • A small notebook for writing notes and questions
  • Something to keep you warm such as a sweater, jacket or shawl. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • A book or magazine

Before your visit with Jefferson's Breast Cancer Survivorship Program, here's what you can expect:

  • Opportunity to meet with a nurse practitioner, nurse and social worker
  • Completion of an individualized cancer treatment summary and follow-up plan of care
  • Copy of your care plan will be shared with other healthcare providers involved in your care, including your primary care provider, radiation oncologist, surgeon, and/or medical oncologist
  • Review of your medical history and a physical examination
  • Assessment to detect recurrence of cancer
  • Identification and management of the physical and psychosocial effects of breast cancer treatment
  • Screening referrals for other cancers
  • Health Promotion recommendations
  • Referrals to support and education programs and other services including lymphedema therapy, complementary and alternative medicine, genetic counseling, sexual health and counseling
